Summer Dog Walking Mistakes That Could Kill Your Dog!

In Petsfolio Dog Walking Services, the comfort and safety of your dog are always a priority. Our trained, experienced walkers understand the nature of the hot weather properly, when, where, and which paths are safe, and which trails are shady and safe so that all summer dog walking, your pup is happy and healthy.

Burned Paw Pads

The Unspoken Injury. Hot pavement is one of the most frequent but not taken seriously. On a sunny day, asphalt and concrete may rise to extremely high temperatures – even twice as high as the air temperature. The pads of the dog paws are delicate and they can blister, or burn in a few seconds.

  • Be aware of the following red flags:
  • Stumbling or not to walk.
  • Sucking or biting nails.
  • On the pads erythema or blistering.
  • Cries on touching surfaces.

Heatstroke: A Life-Threatening Emergency

A Life-Threatening Emergency

Dogs are unable to control their body temperature as well as humans. They depend practically solely on panting, which is insufficient in hot weather. Heatstroke may occur and become lethal within a short time.

The major symptoms of sunstroke are:

  • Panting and drooling.
  • Glazed or blurred eyes.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Loss of coordination or collapse.

Bulldogs, Pugs and Boxer are particularly susceptible because their airways are shortened and the breathing process is further complicated in the heat due to brachycephalic nature.

Dehydration: More Dangerous Than You Think

Not as Easy as You Think. Dogs lose a lot of fluid during hot walks. Dehydration may occur sooner than the majority of the owners may be aware, causing the stress of the organs and severe health problems.

Early Signs that your dog might be dehydrated:

Summer dog walking

  • The dog shows dry or sticky gums
  • The dog has sunken eyes
  • The dog shows skin that does not return to its normal state after a gentle pinch
  • The dog shows both sleepiness and diminished energy.

On any summer walk, always bring fresh water and a portable bowl, and have frequent water breaks even when your dog does not seem dehydrated.

Timing and Surface Matter

The safest method for walking your dog requires you to take him outside during the cool times of the day which occur before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m. while you should walk him on grass and shaded roads whenever possible and you need to restrict walking time to shorter periods during hot weather.

High-Risk Dogs to Watch Closely

Some dogs are more at risk in hot weather, including:

  • Older dogs and puppies.
  • Obese or overweight dogs.
  • Dogs that have heart or breathing conditions.
  • Huskies and Chow Chows, which are thick or double-coated.Summer dog walkings
